The Route from Asunción to Iguazu Falls
The best route to drive from Asunción to Ciudad del Este is via Route PY02 (Supercarretera), a well-maintained highway covering approximately 325 km (202 miles) with a travel time of 5 to 6 hours, depending on traffic. Along the way, you’ll pass through towns like Coronel Oviedo and Caaguazú, where you can stop for food or rest. Upon arrival in Ciudad del Este, you must cross the Friendship Bridge (Puente de la Amistad) into Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil. The bridge is often congested, so expect some delays, especially during peak hours. At the border, you must go through immigration control, so ensure you have your passport and visa (if required for Brazil). Once in Foz do Iguaçu, you are just a 20–30 minute drive from the entrance to Iguaçu National Park, where you can enjoy the breathtaking waterfalls. If you prefer a hassle-free experience, you can also hire a private transfer from Asunción, including assistance with border crossing procedures.
