Iguazu Falls is a binational destination divided between Argentina and Brazil, close to the border with Paraguay. Understanding the geography of the region is essential when choosing an airport, booking a hotel, arranging transfers or planning visits to both national parks.

Airports Near Iguazu Falls

There are three airports in the Triple Frontier region, although IGR and IGU are the most convenient for visiting the falls.

IGR – Cataratas del Iguazú International Airport

IGR is located in Misiones Province, Argentina. It is the best arrival airport for travelers staying in Puerto Iguazú or beginning their visit on the Argentine side.

The airport is approximately 10 kilometers from the entrance to Iguazú National Park and around 20 kilometers from downtown Puerto Iguazú. Most scheduled flights connect IGR with Buenos Aires and other Argentine destinations.

Travelers landing at IGR but staying in Brazil will need a transfer through Argentine and Brazilian immigration.

IGU – Foz do Iguaçu International Airport

IGU is located in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, very close to the entrance to Iguaçu National Park. It is normally the most convenient airport for visitors staying in Foz do Iguaçu or visiting the Brazilian side first.

The airport is approximately 3 kilometers from the Brazilian park visitor center and about 13 kilometers from downtown Foz do Iguaçu. Passengers arriving at IGU and staying in Argentina must cross the international border before reaching Puerto Iguazú.

AGT – Guaraní International Airport

AGT is located in Minga Guazú, Paraguay, and serves the Ciudad del Este metropolitan area. It is approximately 25 kilometers from central Ciudad del Este.

Although AGT appears on the regional map, it is not usually the most practical airport for international visitors whose main purpose is to see Iguazu Falls. Reaching Argentina or Brazil requires additional road travel and at least one international border crossing. Check available flights and transfer arrangements carefully before choosing this airport.

Cities of the Triple Frontier

Puerto Iguazú is the main tourism base on the Argentine side. It offers hotels, restaurants and convenient access to Iguazú National Park.

Foz do Iguaçu is the largest city in the region and the principal base on the Brazilian side. It has a wider urban area, numerous hotels and access to the Brazilian park, Itaipu Dam and the border with Paraguay.

Ciudad del Este is located in Paraguay, across the Paraná River from Foz do Iguaçu. It is mainly known to visitors for shopping and regional commercial activity.

The waterfalls are not located inside any of these cities. Each national park has its own entrance, ticketing system and internal transportation.

International Bridges and Border Crossings

The Tancredo Neves International Bridge, also known as the Fraternity Bridge, connects Puerto Iguazú in Argentina with Foz do Iguaçu in Brazil. This is the border crossing used when traveling between the Argentine and Brazilian sides of Iguazu Falls.

The Friendship Bridge connects Foz do Iguaçu with Ciudad del Este in Paraguay. It is not the bridge used for direct travel between the two national parks.

Border crossing times are variable and should not be calculated using distance alone. Travelers must carry the documentation required for every country visited. Visa and entry requirements depend on nationality and can change, so they should always be checked before travel.

Argentine and Brazilian National Parks

Iguazú National Park in Argentina provides access to several walking circuits, the Ecological Train and the Devil’s Throat area. A regional map will show how to reach the park entrance, but visitors should use the official Argentine park map to identify stations, trails, services and viewing areas.

Iguaçu National Park in Brazil offers the classic panoramic perspective of the waterfalls. Visitors enter through the visitor center and continue using the park’s internal transportation. The main Falls Trail includes several viewpoints before reaching the final walkway and the Porto Canoas area.

Admission tickets are separate for each park. Visiting both countries also requires completing the corresponding immigration procedures.

Hotels Located Inside the National Parks

Gran Meliá Iguazú is located inside Iguazú National Park in Argentina, close to the main walking circuits and with direct views of the falls.

Hotel das Cataratas, A Belmond Hotel, is located inside Iguaçu National Park in Brazil, opposite the main panoramic area.

These properties should not be confused with hotels in Puerto Iguazú or Foz do Iguaçu. Access conditions, transportation and park operating procedures may apply even when staying inside a national park.

Approximate Road Distances

The following distances are intended for general planning:

• Puerto Iguazú to the Argentine park entrance: approximately 18 kilometers
• Foz do Iguaçu to the Brazilian park entrance: approximately 14 kilometers
• IGR Airport to the Argentine park entrance: approximately 10 kilometers
• IGU Airport to the Brazilian park entrance: approximately 3 kilometers
• Puerto Iguazú to central Foz do Iguaçu: approximately 15–20 kilometers, including the border crossing
• Foz do Iguaçu to central Ciudad del Este: approximately 8–10 kilometers, including the border crossing
• Between the Argentine and Brazilian park entrances: approximately 35–45 kilometers, depending on the route

These figures do not represent guaranteed transfer times. Traffic, road conditions and immigration queues can significantly affect the journey.

The Argentine circuit map should be used to locate the Upper Circuit, Lower Circuit, Devil’s Throat route, Ecological Train stations and visitor facilities.

The Brazilian park map shows the visitor center, internal transportation route, panoramic Falls Trail, viewpoints and service areas.
