Iguazu Falls is regularly described as the largest, widest or most impressive waterfall system in the world. With approximately 275 individual cascades extending across almost three kilometres, it is easy to understand why visitors associate the destination with world records.
However, not every impressive statistic is an official Guinness World Records title. Some are geographical classifications, others are historical records measured locally, and a few belong to attractions in the surrounding Iguazu region rather than to the waterfalls themselves.
So, does Iguazu Falls really hold a Guinness World Record? The answer requires separating official Guinness achievements from popular travel claims.
At present, Guinness World Records does not prominently list Iguazu Falls under a simple title such as “world’s largest waterfall” or “world’s widest waterfall.”

This wording recognizes the scale of Iguazu without suggesting that Guinness has formally certified a category that may use different definitions.

Victoria Falls is normally recognized for having one of the world’s largest continuous sheets of falling water, particularly during high-flow periods. Iguazu’s distinction is the vast width and complexity of its entire system.
The figure of approximately 275 cascades is one of Iguazu’s most repeated facts. However, the number is not completely fixed.

For this reason, “275 waterfalls” should be presented as an approximate traditional count rather than an exact number visible every day.
It remains one of the largest and most varied concentrations of waterfalls found in a single natural system, but it is not currently presented as a specific Guinness record for the greatest number of cascades.

On June 9, 2014, extraordinary rainfall across the Upper Iguazu basin produced the highest flow recorded at the falls in modern monitoring.
Published estimates place the peak at approximately 45,700 to 46,300 cubic metres per second. That is equivalent to more than 45 million litres passing through the waterfall system every second.
Under ordinary conditions, the average flow is around 1,500 to 1,800 cubic metres per second. The 2014 flood was therefore approximately 25 to 30 times greater than the usual volume.

Approximately 15 kilometres from central Foz do Iguaçu, Itaipu Binacional is another attraction associated with world-record achievements.
The hydroelectric plant stands on the Paraná River between Brazil and Paraguay. It is not part of Iguazu Falls or the Iguazu River, but it belongs to the same Triple Frontier tourism region.
In 2016, Itaipu generated approximately 103.1 million megawatt-hours, or 103.1 terawatt-hours, of electricity.
This was a landmark annual production record for a single hydroelectric plant. Itaipu also became the first hydropower facility to generate more than 100 terawatt-hours in one year.
