- Ibera Wetlands, Iguazu Falls
Enjoy the incredible Iguazu Falls and extend your visit to the amazing Ibera Wetlands, staying at Rincon del Socorro Lodge
The Interior Atlantic Forest offers a significant and astonishing diversity of birds. The bird list compiled for the Yacutinga Private Wildlife Reserve reaches nearly 300 species. This transforms this natural sanctuary into a paradise for birdwatchers, adding to it the excellent amenities provided by the dedicated service of Yacutinga Lodge.
Thus, a successful birding expedition is guaranteed due to these unique characteristics, environment, and visitor services, complemented by the experience and knowledge of the best Ornithological Guides in the area.
The location of the Yacutinga Wildlife Reserve belongs to the phytogeographic district of Palo Rosa (Aspidosperma polyneuron) and Palmito (Euterpe edulis). It is one of the areas with the greatest biodiversity in Argentina due to its peculiar characteristics, which generate a lush vegetation characterized by its warm climate, constant humidity, and the lack of dry seasons. These environmental conditions transform the area into a giant greenhouse teeming with life.
This is an evergreen forest, dense, and often impenetrable. The different vegetation strata become evident when traversing this intricate, surprising, and vibrant jungle. These vegetation levels in their structure provide shelter, food, and breeding sites for more than 295 bird species observed in the Yacutinga Private Reserve.
Some interesting and noteworthy birds in this privately managed conservation area include:
The Macuco, the Tataupa Chico, the Boat-billed Heron, the Tapicuru, the Criollo Duck, and the King Vulture. There is also the presence of several Accipitridae, some of them among the most powerful in America, such as the Black-and-chestnut Eagle, the Crested Eagle, and the more common Black Eagle, the Hook-billed Kite, and the summer migrants Plumbeous Kite and Swallow-tailed Kite. Moving silently during the tours, it is possible to encounter the Tiny Hawk, one of the smallest and rarest raptors in the world. Regarding the falcons, there are many, with the most common being the Southern Caracara, the Aplomado Falcon, and the Peregrine Falcon. Among the Cracids, two species stand out, the Yacutinga, seriously at risk of extinction in the area, and its cousin the Yacupoi, much easier to observe although in a serious population decline due to poaching.
Sometimes, a family of Hoatzins can be found foraging on the forest floor. While the Slaty-breasted Wood Rail is often seen on the edges of roads, especially when a storm or rain is approaching. Related to these gallinaceous birds, it is also possible to observe the Slaty-breasted Wood Rail near swamps and the Azure Gallinule.
There are several pigeons easy to observe during walks along the Reserve’s trails. From the very common Picazuro Pigeon to the very rare Violaceous Quail-Dove.
We cannot fail to mention the parrots, which with their colorful plumage and vocalizations stand out in this jungle environment. Flocks of Red-winged Tinamous, Green-cheeked Parakeets, and delicate Blue-winged Parrotlets fluttering in circles near the waterholes. As well as the Blue-fronted Parrot, typically seen in pairs, and the Scaly-headed Parrot, with its loud call while flying, are extremely distinctive birds in this environment.
At dusk, the strange call of some Cuckoos such as the Little and Greater Rufous-vented Ground Cuckoos can surprise us. Instead, the Squirrel Cuckoo is a very common bird in the Lodge’s public areas, with its branch-to-branch jumps and behavior, transporting us to the edge of time, reminding us of the Archaeopteryx.
Northeast Argentina is home to more than 17 different species of hummingbirds, with many of them inhabiting the Upper Iguazu River forest. The Black Jacobin and the Black-crested Coquette are easily distinguishable, although their identification in the dense vegetation can be very difficult.
This systematic list continues with the two Argentine Trogon species, the Blue-throated and the Yellow-breasted, both easy to find on the trails. The three most common Kingfishers for the area are the Ringed, Amazon, and Green, with only one record of the Pygmy Kingfisher for this Environmental Reserve.
The Yellow-legged Tinamou often sings at dawn and dusk in the Lodge’s garden, with its characteristic swinging of its notable tail.
All five Argentine toucans are present in this fantastic Private Reserve, with the Banana Toucan being the rarest. The Green-billed Toucan is surprisingly common, and the other three Toucans are frequently seen, especially the Chestnut-eared Toucanet.
The Great Antshrike is often found frequenting termite mounds at medium height within the foliage, and the use of its tail is very noticeable, somehow reminding us of Woodpeckers and Treecreepers.
There is a significant number of Woodpeckers, from the Little Woodpecker to the Great Woodpecker, and it is interesting to try

"the company worked with us to change flights a few times due to cancellations out of Ushaia. Also our guide was great and very helpful!
"Lucia at RipioTurismo did an excellent job arranging my three day Iguazu falls tour from Buenos Aires. Everything was included, except meals. All transport and tour arrangements were executed very well. It was very easy to communicate with the tour operator before and during my trip.
"We had a great tour guide - Lorena Cardenal. She was very calm, extremely knowledgeable about every little detail on Iguazú falls, flora and fauna. She and driver picked us up and dropped us at our hotel and border crossing was so easy with them. She let us spent as much time as we wanted and was cognizant of us taking rest whenever we needed. We saw both sides of Iguazu falls with her. Iguazu falls is so fantastic, no word can describe how beautiful it is and both sides have its own unique features, so see both sides as well as boat ride under water falls on Argentina side was awesome! She even made Matte for us to try, which she made and brought it for us next day. She was so gentle and caring about the park being kept clean. I highly recommend her as your private tour guide.
"Everything went very smoothly. No complaints at all! My guide Jorge was wonderful. I learned so much from him. Be prepared to walk a lot. Be sure to include the boat ride on the Argentina side. It is well worth it, but be prepared to get drenched! If you go to the Brazilian side, don’t think twice about taking the helicopter for -about $125 USD. It will give you a spectacular view even though it is a short ride. ( I didn’t have time to get to the Brazilian side to do it). I understand the hotels are wonderful, so if you go, do two days if you can. Passing all the information on to a travel agent I know to have anyone interested in going to Iguazu Falls to use this company! I flew at 6 am from Buena Aires to Iguazu Falls and flew back at 8:15! It is easily possible to do this Argentina side in a day.
"Jala, our guide as fantastic - fun, informative and attententive. The bus driver was great. All went well.
